Looking through the Wikipedia list, let’s visit the Eastern European manufacturers.

V.A. Degtyarev Plant is a one of the largest enterprise in Russian. With a military heritage, the company produces among weapons and sewing machines, motorcycles. (A few other motorcycle companies are also from a military lineage, which?)

Have you seen one of their motorcycles?

Motorcycle Maker: Hyosung

A reader pointed out that Korea has 2 large motorcycle companies. We mentioned Daelim, today we take a look at Hyosung.

Hyosung‘s fullname is Hyosung Motors & Machinery Inc. Founded in 1978 , it started by assembling motorcycle licenced from Suzuki (compare Daelim and Honda).

Compared to other Asian motorcycle manufacturers (except Japan) which focused on smaller displacement motorcycles, Hyosung has a range of 650 models for sport, road and curiser.

More Motorcycle Manufacturers

Over the last few months we had explored motorcycle manufacturers. Most of the major players are all covered by now. Wikipedia have a list of motorcycle manufacturers which has some manufacturers that I am not aware of.

We had also looked at a number of Chinese motorcycle makers. To my surprise, there is a substantial search interest in CFMoto and other chinese motorcycle brands. Because of this, I decided to spend a little more time to research on the Chinese motorcycle market and development.

Stay tuned!

Motorcycle Magazine: Cycle World

Cycle World May 2006Since starting this blog, I became more attuned to all things motorcycle. I took second look at motorcycles on the road or in the parking lots. In the bookstore I look for motorcycle related books. On the web I surf for motorcycle sites.

Today I was at the Takashimaya National Library and found that they subscribed to the Cycle World magazine.

The magazine open my eyes to more things I do not know about motorcycles and motorcycling. New vocabularies like rake and trail as well as technical concept like progressive, straight-rate and dual-rate damping. Not only that, there are many products that I do not know exist.

While the Internet is a treasure chest of information, separating the gold (valuable information) from the rocks is still hardwork. Paying for a good old printed-paper magazine may be well worth it.

Any other good magazine you read to recommend?

Motorcycle Maker: Daelim

daelim-logo.gifDaelim Motor is a Korean motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1962.

From its beginning as Honda parts assembler for domestic market, Daelim is now exporting its motorcycle to the world.

In Singapore, I first came across the name while looking for my first bike.

Daelim Magma 125Since I was restricted to the 125cc category, the Daelim Magma 125, with it’s good look was a natural candidate.

It was again a candidate when I upgraded to the Suzuki Marauder 125. In the end I did not choose it because I wasn’t convinced enough to try the Korean quality. The other nagging thoughts was whether maintenance and parts are available.

Do you own a Daelim? Let us know your thoughts.
